Statement of University Affairs Principles
This statement of University Affairs principles has been adopted by the Board of Directors of the California State Student Association (CSSA) to provide basic parameters guiding positions taken by the Board on matters in discussion at the CSU Office of the Chancellor or pending before the CSU Board of Trustees.
The following constitute the core principles guiding recommendations on University Affairs matters:
- Seek to promote access, affordability, and quality of instruction in the California State University in accordance with the Master Plan for Higher Education.
- Seek to expand the role that students play in the decisions that affect our University while respecting and preserving the California State University's statutory and traditional authority over academic affairs and internal governance.
- Promote, wherever appropriate, the shared governance of our University including the traditional role of the Statewide Academic Senate as the consultative body on matters of academic affairs.
- Seek to influence the outcome of systemwide issues, policies, and procedures that may affect, either directly or indirectly, the students of the California State University and the quality of their educational experience.
- When it is appropriate to the mission of CSSA and not in conflict with the interests of any other campus, assist the Associated Students in seeking to influence the outcome of campus issues, policies, and procedures that may affect the students of that campus and the quality of their educational experience.
- Support those matters that would positively influence the maintenance and enhancement of diversity and multiculturalism within the California State University. Seek to expand those programs and practices that encourage equal access to and participation by all qualified CSU students, including but not limited to outreach and retention services.
- Preserve the integrity of the California State University's efforts to prepare teachers for K-12 schools in California and encourage the development and maintenance of partnerships with K-12 schools to achieve the improvement of schools and teacher education at all levels.
- Seek to provide representation by the California State Student Association on all appropriate existing systemwide committees and work groups and to ensure student representation on any newly created systemwide committees.
