Systemwide Committees: Student Representative Reports
Health Advisory Committee Report
December 9-11, 2005
I attended the system wide committee meeting on health, on Nov. 5th 2005. We talked about a lot of issues which I will elaborate on below.
- 'Electric Health Record' which aids in proper paperless medical record keeping, was discussed and this method of record keeping has been practiced by a few CSUs already.
- We touched the issue of disaster planning, such as the Katrina disaster.
- This committee sponsors an annual survey of health centers in all the 23 CSUs, and during the meeting we received the result of the last survey. This survey is to asses the risk involvement or management with different campuses, and so to have a base for improvement, campus confidentiality is maintained with this survey. Issues concerning accreditations were discussed.
- We were briefed on the issue of the Asian flu (H5N1 Virus). So far it is not here in the U.S., they don't know how, where, when or if it will come to the U.S.
- Health centers are urged to be prepared for the Asian flu, also to have at least 25% back-up in terms of staff, and to also enforce personal hygiene among their staff.
- People are encouraged to get the flu shot, it will not prevent against the Asian flu but might slow the process.
- Health centers are also encouraged to increase the awareness about the Asian flu on their different campuses.
- There are no travel restrictions so far, but travelers to Asian countries are being checked or advised.
- The young (1-17-32 yrs) are the age range that pose the biggest threat of being affected with this Asian flu.
- Finally, health centers are greatly urged to maintain a healthy relationship with their current local health centers, for updates on the Asian flu.
Please contact me with ideas on issues you might want to be included in the next survey for the 2005-2006 academic year.
